The Question about the Messiah

41 While the Pharisees were together, Jesus questioned them,(A) 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose Son is He?”

“David’s,” they told Him.

43 He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit,[a] calls Him ‘Lord’(B):

44 The Lord declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand
until I put Your enemies under Your feet’?[b](C)[c]

45 “If David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how then can the Messiah be his Son?” 46 No one was able to answer Him at all,[d] and from that day no one dared to question Him anymore.(D)

34 When Jesus saw that he answered intelligently, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”(A) And no one dared(B) to question Him any longer.

The Question about the Messiah

35 So(C) Jesus asked this question as He taught in the temple complex,(D) “How can the scribes(E) say that the Messiah(F) is the Son of David?(G) 36 David(H) himself says by the Holy Spirit:(I)

The Lord(J) declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand(K)
until I put Your enemies under Your feet.’(L)[a]

37 David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how then can the Messiah be his Son?” And the large crowd was listening to Him with delight.
