¹⁹ and they ^(A)will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on ^(B)the third day He will be raised up.”

² “^(A)You know that after two days ^(B)the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be ^(C)handed over for crucifixion.”

³³ saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and ^(A)the Son of Man will be ^[a]handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will ^[b]hand Him over to the Gentiles. ³⁴ And they will mock Him and ^(B)spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

^35 [c](C)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to ^[d]Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” ³⁶ And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” ³⁷ They said to Him, “^[e]Grant that we ^(D)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” ³⁸ But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able ^(E)to drink the cup that I drink, or ^(F)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” ³⁹ They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink ^(G)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. ⁴⁰ But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; ^(H)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

^41 (I)Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with ^[f]James and John. ⁴² Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their ^[g]people in high position exercise authority over them. ⁴³ But it is not this way among you; ^(J)rather, whoever wants to become ^[h]prominent among you shall be your servant; ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man ^(K)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His ^[i]life as a ransom for many.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

^46 (L)Then they *came to Jericho. And later, ^(M)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. ⁴⁷ And when he heard that it was Jesus the ^(N)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, ^(O)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ⁴⁸ Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “^(P)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ⁴⁹ And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the man who was blind, saying to him, “^(Q)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.” ⁵⁰ And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus. ⁵¹ And replying to him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the man who was blind said to Him, “^[j](R)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!” ⁵² And Jesus said to him, “Go; ^(S)your faith has ^[k]made you well.” And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.

^32 (A)For He will be ^[a]handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon, ³³ and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” ^34 [b](B)The disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

Bartimaeus Receives Sight

^35 (C)Now as ^[c](D)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the road, begging. ³⁶ But when he heard a crowd going by, he began inquiring what this was. ³⁷ They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. ³⁸ And he called out, saying, “Jesus, ^(E)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ³⁹ Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “^(F)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ⁴⁰ And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He asked him, ⁴¹ “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” ⁴² And Jesus said to him, “Regain your sight; ^(G)your faith has ^[d]made you well.” ⁴³ And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, ^(H)glorifying God; and when ^(I)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.

¹⁴ And just as ^(A)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must ^(B)the Son of Man ^(C)be lifted up,

²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you ^(A)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that ^[a](B)I am, and ^(C)I do nothing ^[b]on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me.

³² And I, if I ^(A)am lifted up from the earth, will ^(B)draw all people to Myself.” ³³ Now He was saying this ^(C)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. ³⁴ The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from ^(D)the Law that ^(E)the ^[a]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The ^(F)Son of Man must be ^(G)lifted up’? Who is this ^(H)Son of Man?” ³⁵ So Jesus said to them, “^(I)For a little while longer ^(J)the Light is among you. ^(K)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who ^(L)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. ³⁶ While you have the Light, ^(M)believe in the Light, so that you may become ^(N)sons of Light.”

These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and ^(O)hid Himself from them. ³⁷ But though He had performed so many ^[b]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him. ³⁸ This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “^(P)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” ³⁹ For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, ⁴⁰ “^(Q)He has blinded their eyes and He ^(R)hardened their heart, so that they will not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and ^[c]be converted, and so I will not heal them.” ⁴¹ These things Isaiah said because ^(S)he saw His glory, and ^(T)he spoke about Him. ⁴² Nevertheless ^(U)many, even of ^(V)the rulers, believed in Him, but ^(W)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be ^(X)excommunicated from the synagogue; ^43 (Y)for they loved the ^[d]approval of people rather than the ^[e]approval of God.

⁴⁴ Now Jesus cried out and said, “^(Z)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. ⁴⁵ And ^(AA)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. ^46 (AB)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. ⁴⁷ If anyone hears My ^[f]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for ^(AC)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. ^48 (AD)The one who rejects Me and does not ^[g]accept My ^[h]teachings has one who judges him: ^(AE)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on ^(AF)the last day. ^49 (AG)For I did not speak ^[i]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me ^(AH)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. ⁵⁰ And I know that ^(AI)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak ^(AJ)just as the Father has told Me.”
