18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls—it will crush him!” 19 And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay their[a] hands on him at that same hour, and they were afraid of the people, for they knew that he had told this parable with reference to them.

20 And they watched him[b] closely and[c] sent spies who pretended they were upright, in order that they could catch him in a statement, so that they could hand him over to the authority and the jurisdiction of the governor.

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(B) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(C)

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(E) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(F)
