17 And He looked at them, and said, “What, then, is the meaning of that which is written, ‘The stone that the builders refused, is made the head cornerstone?’

18 “Whoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be broken. And whomever it shall fall upon will be ground into powder.”

19 Then that same hour, the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people. For they perceived that He had spoken this parable against them.

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone’[a]?(A)

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(B)

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(C) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(D)
