45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you(A) until you are destroyed,(B) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.(C) 47 Because you did not serve(D) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly(E) in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst,(F) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke(G) on your neck(H) until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you(I) from far away, from the ends of the earth,(J) like an eagle(K) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,(L) 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old(M) or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine(N) or olive oil,(O) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.(P) 52 They will lay siege(Q) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.(R)

17 And in that day I will become angry(A) with them and forsake(B) them; I will hide(C) my face(D) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(E) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(F) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

People will answer,(A) ‘Because they have forsaken(B) the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster(C) on them.’”

But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath(A), when his righteous judgment(B) will be revealed. God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”[a](C) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor(D) and immortality,(E) he will give eternal life.(F) But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,(G) there will be wrath and anger.(H) There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:(I) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;(J)
