¹² They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
    pipes^(A) and timbrels^(B) and wine,
but they have no regard^(C) for the deeds of the Lord,
    no respect for the work of his hands.^(D)

² you town so full of commotion,
    you city of tumult^(A) and revelry?^(B)
Your slain^(C) were not killed by the sword,^(D)
    nor did they die in battle.

¹³ But see, there is joy and revelry,^(A)
    slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep,
    eating of meat and drinking of wine!^(B)
“Let us eat and drink,” you say,
    “for tomorrow we die!”^(C)

⁷ Is this your city of revelry,^(A)
    the old, old city,
whose feet have taken her
    to settle in far-off lands?

⁸ The joyful timbrels^(A) are stilled,
    the noise^(B) of the revelers^(C) has stopped,
    the joyful harp^(D) is silent.^(E)

³⁹ But while they are aroused,
    I will set out a feast for them
    and make them drunk,^(A)
so that they shout with laughter—
    then sleep forever^(B) and not awake,”
declares the Lord.^(C)
