⁵ For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
    behold, it descends for judgement upon ^(A)Edom,
    upon the people ^(B)I have devoted to destruction.
⁶ The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
    it is gorged with fat,
    with the blood of lambs and goats,
    with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
^(C)For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
    a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

^21 (A)Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
    you who dwell in ^(B)the land of Uz;
but to you also ^(C)the cup shall pass;
    you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.
^22 (D)The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
    he will keep you in exile no longer;^[a]
but ^(E)your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
    he will uncover your sins.

^(A)“For three transgressions of ^(B)Edom,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
^(C)because he pursued his brother with the sword
    ^(D)and cast off all pity,
^(E)and his anger tore perpetually,
    ^(F)and he kept his wrath for ever.
¹² So I will send a fire upon ^(G)Teman,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of ^(H)Bozrah.”

^(B)“Is wisdom no more in ^(C)Teman?
    ^(D)Has counsel perished from the prudent?
    ^(E)Has their wisdom vanished?
^8 (F)Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
    O inhabitants of ^(G)Dedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
    ^(H)the time when I punish him.
^9 (I)If grape-gatherers came to you,
    would they not leave ^(J)gleanings?
^(K)If thieves came by night,
    would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
^10 (L)But I have stripped Esau bare;
    ^(M)I have uncovered his hiding places,
    and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
    and his neighbours; and ^(N)he is no more.
^11 (O)Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
    ^(P)and let your widows trust in me.”

^14 (V)I have heard a message from the Lord,
    and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
^(W)“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
    and rise up for battle!
¹⁵ For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
    despised among mankind.
¹⁶ The horror you inspire has deceived you,
    and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,^[a]
    who hold the height of the hill.
Though you ^(X)make your nest as high as the eagle's,
    I will bring you down from there,
declares the Lord.

^8 (A)Will I not on that day, declares the Lord,
    destroy the wise men out of Edom,
    and understanding out of ^(B)Mount Esau?
⁹ And your mighty men shall be dismayed, ^(C)O Teman,
    so that every man from ^(D)Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.

^10 (E)Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
    shame shall cover you,
    ^(F)and you shall be cut off for ever.
^11 (G)On the day that you stood aloof,
    ^(H)on the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
    ^(I)and cast lots for Jerusalem,
    you were like one of them.
^12 (J)But do not gloat over the day of your brother
    in the day of his misfortune;
^(K)do not rejoice over the people of Judah
    in the day of their ruin;
^(L)do not boast^[a]
    in the day of distress.
^13 (M)Do not enter the gate of my people
    in the day of their calamity;
^(N)do not gloat over his disaster
    in the day of his calamity;
^(O)do not loot his wealth
    in the day of his calamity.
^14 (P)Do not stand at the crossroads
    to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
    in the day of distress.
