⁵ Those who made Cush their hope and Egypt their boast will be dismayed and ashamed.^{(A) 6} And the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day, ‘Look, this is what has happened to those we relied on and fled to for help to rescue us from the king of Assyria! Now, how will we escape?’”

¹⁸ “For this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and fury were poured out on Jerusalem’s residents,^(A) so will My fury pour out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of cursing, scorn,^(B) execration, and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.’

²² Now therefore, know for certain that by the sword, famine, and plague you will die in the place where you desired to go to live for a while.”
