⁵ Those who made Cush their hope and Egypt their boast will be dismayed and ashamed.^{(A) 6} And the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day, ‘Look, this is what has happened to those we relied on and fled to for help to rescue us from the king of Assyria! Now, how will we escape?’”

⁶ Look, you are relying on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff^(A) that will pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.^(B)

¹⁸ “For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as my anger and fury were poured out on Jerusalem’s residents,^(A) so will my fury pour out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an example for cursing, scorn,^(B) execration, and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.’

²² Now therefore, know for certain that by the sword, famine, and plague you will die in the place where you desired to go to stay for a while.”
