¹⁰ When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, they lamented and wept loudly, and Joseph mourned seven days for his father. ¹¹ When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a solemn mourning on the part of the Egyptians.” Therefore the place is named Abel-mizraim.^[a] It is across the Jordan.

Introduction

1 These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness,^(A) in the Arabah opposite Suph,^[a] between Paran^(B) and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth,^(C) and Di-zahab.

⁵ Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying:

The Land of the Transjordan Tribes

⁸ “At that time we took the land from the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon,

²⁰ until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and they also take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you.^(A)

²⁵ Please let me cross over and see the beautiful land^(A) on the other side of the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.
