¹³ But they replied, “Your servants^(A) were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan.^(B) The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”^(C)

⁷ But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants^(A) to do anything like that!^(B)

⁹ If any of your servants^(A) is found to have it, he will die;^(B) and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.^(C)”

¹⁶ “What can we say to my lord?^(A)” Judah^(B) replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?^(C) God has uncovered your servants’^(D) guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves^(E)—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.^(F)”

¹⁹ My lord asked his servants,^(A) ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’^(B)

²¹ “Then you said to your servants,^(A) ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’^(B)

³¹ sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.^(A) Your servants^(B) will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave^(C) in sorrow.

³⁴ you should answer, ‘Your servants^(A) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’^(B) Then you will be allowed to settle^(C) in the region of Goshen,^(D) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.^(E)”

³ Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”^(A)

“Your servants^(B) are shepherds,^(C)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.”
