¹⁶ Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in ^(A)this place, and I did not know it.” ¹⁷ And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

¹⁸ Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, ^(B)set it up as a pillar, ^(C)and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of ^(D)that place ^[a]Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. ^20 (E)Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If ^(F)God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me ^(G)bread to eat and clothing to put on, ²¹ so that ^(H)I come back to my father’s house in peace, ^(I)then the Lord shall be my God. ²² And this stone which I have set as a pillar ^(J)shall be God’s house, ^(K)and of all that You give me I will surely give a ^[b]tenth to You.”

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to ^(A)Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, ^(B)who appeared to you ^(C)when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

⁶ So Jacob came to ^(A)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.

¹⁵ And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, ^(A)Bethel.
