Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai,^(A) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.^(B) But she had an Egyptian slave^(C) named Hagar;^(D)

¹¹ Abraham and Sarah were already very old,^(A) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.^(B)

²¹ Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless.^(A) The Lord answered his prayer,^(B) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

Jacob’s Children

³¹ When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,^(A) he enabled her to conceive,^(B) but Rachel remained childless.

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,^(A) she became jealous of her sister.^(B) So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

²² Then God remembered Rachel;^(A) he listened to her^(B) and enabled her to conceive.^(C)

² A certain man of Zorah,^(A) named Manoah,^(B) from the clan of the Danites,^(C) had a wife who was childless,^(D) unable to give birth.

⁵ But to Hannah he gave a double portion^(A) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.^(B)
