⁷ He also said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”^(A)

⁸ But he said, “Lord God, how can I know^(B) that I will possess it?”

⁹ He said to him, “Bring me a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

¹⁰ So he brought all these to him, cut them in half, and laid the pieces opposite each other, but he did not cut the birds^(C) in half. ¹¹ Birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. ¹² As the sun was setting, a deep sleep^(D) came over Abram, and suddenly great terror and darkness descended on him.

¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram,^(E) “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be resident aliens^(F) for four hundred years^(G) in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.^{[a] 14} However, I will judge the nation they serve,^(H) and afterward they will go out with many possessions.^{(I) 15} But you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.^{(J) 16} In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”^[b](K)

¹⁷ When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the divided animals.

²⁴ Fire came from the Lord and consumed^(A) the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted^(B) and fell facedown.^(C)

²¹ The angel of the Lord extended the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire came up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.

²² When Gideon realized that he was the angel of the Lord, he said, “Oh no, Lord God!^(A) I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!” ^(B)

²³ But the Lord said to him, “Peace to you. Don’t be afraid, for you will not die.” ²⁴ So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace.^[a] It is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites today.

²⁴ Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.^(A) The God who answers with fire, he is God.”

All the people answered, “That’s fine.”

³⁸ Then the Lord’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.
