⁸ Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent with ^(A)Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and ^(B)called upon the name of the Lord.

² Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near ^(A)Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “^[a]Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.

⁹ So Joshua sent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remained between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua spent that night among the people.

16 Then the lot for the sons of Joseph went from the Jordan at Jericho to the waters of Jericho on the east into ^(A)the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel.
