17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

(A)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(B)With [a]hard labor you shall eat from it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;
Yet you shall eat the [b]plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your face
You shall eat bread,
Until you (C)return to the ground,
Because (D)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 Now the man named his wife [c](E)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of (F)Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out with his hand, and take fruit also from (G)the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (H)He drove the man out; and at the (I)east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the (J)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to (K)the tree of life.

20 Adam[a] named his wife Eve,[b](K) because she would become the mother of all the living.

21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.(L) 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,(M) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life(N) and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden(O) to work the ground(P) from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[c] of the Garden of Eden(Q) cherubim(R) and a flaming sword(S) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.(T)

22 “Now the future generation, your sons who rise up after you and (A)the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of that land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it, will say, 23 ‘All its land is (B)brimstone and salt, (C)burned debris, [a]unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows on it, like the overthrow of (D)Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’ 24 All the nations will say, ‘(E)Why has the Lord done all this to this land? Why this great [b]outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will say, ‘It is (F)because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 And they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they have not known and whom He had not [c]assigned to them. 27 Therefore, the anger of the Lord burned against that land, (G)to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and (H)the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, fury, and in great wrath, and hurled them into another land, as it is this day.’

29 (I)The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but (J)the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, so that we may [d]follow all the words of this Law.

22 Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it.(A) 23 The whole land will be a burning waste(B) of salt(C) and sulfur—nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah,(D) Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in fierce anger.(E) 24 All the nations will ask: “Why has the Lord done this to this land?(F) Why this fierce, burning anger?”

25 And the answer will be: “It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.(G) 26 They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.(H) 28 In furious anger and in great wrath(I) the Lord uprooted(J) them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now.”
