33 She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, “Because the Lord heard that I was unloved,[a] he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[b]
34 She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, “Now this time my husband will show me affection,[c] because I have given birth to three sons for him.” That is why he was named Levi.[d]
35 She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” That is why she named him Judah.[e] Then she stopped having children.

- Genesis 29:33 sn The name Simeon (שִׁמְעוֹן, shimʿon) is derived from the verbal root שָׁמַע (shamaʿ) and means “hearing.” The name is appropriate since it is reminder that the Lord “heard” about Leah’s unloved condition and responded with pity.
- Genesis 29:34 tn Heb “will be joined to me.”
- Genesis 29:34 sn The name Levi (לֵוִי, levi), the precise meaning of which is debated, was appropriate because it sounds like the verb לָוָה (lavah, “to join”), used in the statement recorded earlier in the verse.
- Genesis 29:35 sn The name Judah (יְהוּדָה, yehudah) means “he will be praised” and reflects the sentiment Leah expresses in the statement recorded earlier in the verse. 33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(A) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[a](B)
34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(C) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[b](D)
35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[c](E) Then she stopped having children.(F)
