¹⁵ lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they ^(A)play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them ^(B)invites you and you ^(C)eat of his sacrifice,

²⁵ “When you beget children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, and ^(A)do evil in the sight of the Lord your God to provoke Him to anger, ^26 (B)I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess; you will not ^[a]prolong your days in it, but will be utterly destroyed. ²⁷ And the Lord ^(C)will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord will drive you. ²⁸ And ^(D)there you will serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, ^(E)which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

¹¹ Then the children of Israel did ^(A)evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals;

¹² and they ^(A)forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed ^(B)other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they ^(C)bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger.

¹⁷ Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they ^(A)played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so.
