⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, ^(A)I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may ^(B)test them, whether or not they will walk in My ^[a]instruction.

^2 (A)And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has ^(B)led you in the wilderness these forty years, in order to humble you, ^(C)putting you to the test, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

¹⁶ In the wilderness it was He who fed you manna ^(A)which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to ^(B)put you to the test, to do good for you ^[a]in the end.

²² in order to ^(A)test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it as their fathers ^[a]did, or not.”

Idolatry Leads to Servitude

3 ^(A)Now these are the nations that the Lord left, to test Israel by them (that is, all the Israelites who had not ^[a]experienced any of the wars of Canaan;

⁴ They were left to ^(A)test Israel by them, to find out if they would ^[a]obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers ^[b]through Moses.
