² in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world,^(A) according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens,^[a](B) the spirit^(C) now working in the disobedient.^{[b] 3} We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly^(D) desires, carrying out the inclinations^(E) of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath^(F) as the others were also.

²² You took off^[a](A) your former way of life,^(B) the old self^[b](C) that is corrupted by deceitful desires;

⁸ For you were once darkness, but now you are light^(A) in the Lord. Walk as children of light^(B)—

³ For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved by various passions^(A) and pleasures,^(B) living in malice and envy, hateful, detesting one another.
