The race is not to the swift
    or the battle to the strong,^(A)

    or wealth to the brilliant
    or favor to the learned;

¹⁰ You have trusted^(A) in your wickedness
    and have said, ‘No one sees me.’^(B)
Your wisdom^(C) and knowledge mislead^(D) you
    when you say to yourself,
    ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’

³ Are you wiser than Daniel^[a]?^(A)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
⁴ By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.^(B)
5 By your great skill in trading^(C)
    you have increased your wealth,^(D)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.^(E)

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
⁷ I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;^(F)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom^(G)
    and pierce your shining splendor.^(H)
