³⁰ Therefore the Lord God of Israel declares, ‘^(A)I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father was to walk before Me forever’; but now the Lord declares, ‘Far be it from Me—for ^(B)those who honor Me I will honor, and those ^(C)who despise Me will be insignificant.

²⁹ And it came about at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that ^(A)the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now ^[a]Ahijah had clothed himself with a new cloak; and both of them were alone in the field. ³⁰ Then ^(B)Ahijah took hold of the new cloak which was on him and tore it into twelve pieces. ³¹ And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, ^(C)I am going to tear the kingdom away from the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribes

¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people; ^(A)because it was ^[a]a turn of events from the Lord, ^(B)in order to establish His word which the Lord spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

The Kingdom Divided; Jeroboam Rules Israel

¹⁶ When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,

So Israel went away to their tents.

²⁰ And it came about, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent word and called him to the assembly, and made him king over all Israel. ^(A)None except the tribe of Judah alone followed the house of David.

^15 (A)They rejected His statutes and ^(B)His covenant which He made with their fathers, and His warnings which He ^[a]gave them. And ^(C)they followed ^[b]idols and ^(D)became empty, and followed the nations that surrounded them, about which the ^(E)Lord had commanded them not to do as they did.

²¹ When ^(A)He had torn Israel from the house of David, ^(B)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then ^(C)Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the Lord and misled them into a great sin.
