19 in which[a] he also went and made proclamation to the spirits(A) in prison 20 who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah(B) while the ark was being prepared. In it a few—that is, eight people[b](C)—were saved through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body,(D) but the pledge[c] of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(E)

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
