The Question about the Messiah

41 While the Pharisees were together, Jesus questioned them,(A) 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

They replied, “David’s.”

43 He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit,[a] calls him ‘Lord’:(B)

44 The Lord declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies under your feet’?[b][c] (C)

45 “If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how, then, can he be his son?” 46 No one was able to answer him at all,[d] and from that day no one dared to question him anymore.(D)

35 While(C) Jesus was teaching in the temple, he asked,(D) “How can the scribes(E) say that the Messiah(F) is the son of David?(G) 36 David(H) himself says by the Holy Spirit: (I)

The Lord(J) declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at my right hand(K)
until I put your enemies under your feet.’[a](L)

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How, then, can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.
