⁵ The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.^(A)

⁶ When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.^{(B) 7} This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:

¹⁰ When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented^(L) and did not bring on them the destruction^(M) he had threatened.^(N)

²¹ “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!^(A) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,^(B) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.^{(C) 22} But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.^{(D) 23} And you, Capernaum,^(E) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.^[a](F) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.^(A) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.^{(B) 47} For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

⁴⁸ When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;^(E) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
