³² Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.^(A) She named him Reuben,^[a](B) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.^(C) Surely my husband will love me now.”

⁴² If the God of my father,^(A) the God of Abraham^(B) and the Fear of Isaac,^(C) had not been with me,^(D) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,^(E) and last night he rebuked you.^(F)”

²⁴ God heard their groaning and he remembered^(A) his covenant^(B) with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.

⁷ The Lord said, “I have indeed seen^(A) the misery^(B) of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned^(C) about their suffering.^(D)

⁹ And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing^(A) them.

³¹ and they believed.^(A) And when they heard that the Lord was concerned^(B) about them and had seen their misery,^(C) they bowed down and worshiped.^(D)

⁷ Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice^(A) and saw^(B) our misery,^(C) toil and oppression.^(D)

¹⁶ “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint^(A) him ruler^(B) over my people Israel; he will deliver^(C) them from the hand of the Philistines.^(D) I have looked on my people, for their cry^(E) has reached me.”
